Bird flu has arrived in Australia. Our rescuers need to be protected – urgently.
H5N1 avian influenza is spreading through Australian wildlife. NSW Health requires P2/N95 masks, goggles, gloves and protective clothing for anyone handling sick or dead birds but we aren’t receiving government funding. Hunter Wildlife Rescue’s volunteers are 100% unpaid and self-funded. Help us keep them safe so they can keep rescuing.

PPE is now required for every bird rescue
Hunter Wildlife Rescue’s volunteers respond to sick, injured and orphaned native birds across more than 1 million hectares of the Hunter region. We respond to over 250 calls for help with birds every month.
With H5N1 bird flu now confirmed in Australian wildlife, NSW Health guidance is clear: anyone handling sick or injured birds needs proper protective equipment — P2/N95 masks, eye protection, gloves and protective clothing.
Government funding for this equipment hasn’t been made available to wildlife rescue groups. That cost falls entirely on organisations like ours, and on the volunteers who show up regardless.
We’re not asking our rescuers to choose between their safety and an animal in distress. We’re asking you to help us make sure they never have to.
