Found a fledgling? Here’s what to do

  • 1

If it is injured or in imminent danger call our 24/7 Rescue Line: 0418 628 483. A rescuer will attend and bring the fledgling into care if needed.

  • 2

Don’t put it back in the nest. Once fledglings leave the nest, they rarely return. If you put it back, it will simply hop out again.

  • 3

Move it to safety (if needed). Place the fledgling on a nearby perch or shrub, out of harm’s way.

  • 4

Keep cats, dogs, and other pets indoors.

  • 5

Give the parents space. Fledgling parents may have several chicks scattered nearby.

  • 6

Step back and observe from a distance to allow them to return.

  • 7

Check for feeding signs. Watch over the next few hours to see if the parents return to feed the chick. Hint: If the bird is pooping, it’s a good sign it’s being fed!

  • 8

Look for warning signs. Parents don’t return within a few hours. The chick shows signs of illness, injury, or weakness. The fledgling is attacked by other birds
