Species:
Yellow Nosed Albatross

This Yellow Nosed Albatross
was rescued from the Veness S, a commercial fishing boat based
at the Nelson Bay marina, after it flew into the boat and stunned
itself 10 nautical miles off Broughton Island. This rare oceanic
wanderer to Australian shores has been assessed and found to be
a nine and half year old male, bred on Amsterdam Island, a remote
volcanic island located in the southern most Indian Ocean approximately
3,000 km from any continent, halfway between South Africa and
Australia. He is in good condition apart from head trauma which
is mild. X rays show no fractures just bruising and muscle soreness
causing his eye to be a little closed but the eye itself is healthy.
As he will probably start breeding next year, with the joint support
of the NATF Inc Wildlife Rescue Service, NPWS and Taronga Wildlife
clinic, it is hoped to have this magnificent albatross re-released
back where it was found. |
